Redbird legacy: Four children follow couple’s lead

An apartment choice made independently by Bob Mathes and Susan (Hawkins) as they completed undergraduate degrees in agriculture and chemistry respectively resulted in romance and creation of an ISU legacy family.

A family of five holding signs with their graduation years on the signs.

Valerie (Quevillon) Duewer ’84 arrived at Illinois State wondering if she would enjoy attending with her older brother, Pat ’83. Decades later, she is grateful they were on campus together.

How we met: Jim Brinkmeyer and Joyce Cunningham

A man and woman smiling for the picture

Joyce Cunningham recalls one very cold night on campus in 1969. A storm had dumped nearly eight inches of snow. She left Milner Library and headed for coffee at The Cage before trudging a mile home.

Redbird legacy: Siblings started family’s longtime bond with ISU

Asplund Redbird family members are, from left to right, Joy (Asplund) Dwyer ’76; Mary (Asplund) Orton ’74, M.S.’78; Ione (Asplund) Hesch ’69; and Roy Asplund ’65, M.S.’68.

A photo taken during the Christmas season of 1962 has special meaning to Mary (Asplund) Orton. She is pictured in it at age 9 with her parents, two sisters, and older brother Roy. The female siblings are wearing Illinois State sweatshirts that were gifts from Roy, who at the time was a freshman.

How we met: Pam and Jerry McGreal

Pam and Jerry McGreal

Pam Franco ’68 was a freshman when her roommate, Linda Ohmart ’68, worked at convincing her to go to yet another Friday night campus mixer at the student union.
