Incoming freshman Summer Fields will study early childhood education at Illinois State University. She carries with her four years of experience helping preschoolers prepare for grade school, and the rest of their lives.

Ruben Ramirez dreaded going to school as an elementary student. Between the ages of 8 and 11, he moved back and forth between Mexico and Chicago, which not only made school difficult, but learning English as well. At 13, he could barely speak the language.

Growing up, Andrea Jamison couldn’t spend summers outside because of the neighborhood she lived in. There was no money for camp, but she had access to books and read a lot, which she calls her “saving grace.”

Green STEMS Project grows interest in sustainability

But stations where they can blow on a colorful anemometer to make the wind speed change, sink their hands into sand, or explore why a butterfly’s wings are blue are a game-changer. The Green STEMS Project is a sustainability outreach program for children and families.

The Connected Communities Initiative (CCI) program is a partnership between OSF HealthCare and Illinois State University aimed at developing solutions to health challenges in Central Illinois. The partners are looking for new tools, techniques, and processes that remove barriers to care, enhance health and wellness education, and leverage technology to improve training and community outreach.

AKA chapter growing on campus

For 25 years, there wasn’t an active chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) on campus. But three years ago, that changed. On November 14, 2021, the undergraduate Eta Alpha chapter, which is under the AKA umbrella, was reinstated at Illinois State University.
