Ali Riaz, University Professor of Politics and Government, has been quoted in both the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Express of Bangladesh. The WSJ article explores Bangladeshi terrorism, with Riaz noting that recent terrorists are a new generation  comprised of members who are “tech-savvy, highly educated, and boasting deeper transnational links than their predecessors.” Riaz also adds that “as many as 100 of the 850 or so British fighters who joined Islamic State in Syria and Iraq may be of Bangladeshi origin.”

“Overall, it appears that Bangladesh has not succeeded in using its geopolitical and geostrategic importance to its advantage.”

In the Financial Express of Bangladesh Riaz is quoted on the topic of Bangladesh’s global diplomacy in 2017.  Highlighting  Riaz remarked that though Bangladesh was international recognized for its role in welcoming the Rohingya refugees, “the Rohingya crisis also revealed how Bangladesh’s interests were largely ignored by its friends such as India, China and Russia.” In the broader sense, he adds, “it appears that Bangladesh has not succeeded in using its geopolitical and geostrategic importance to its advantage.”
