Illinois State University will celebrate all first-generation students, faculty, and staff with the first-ever campus-wide First Generation Powerhouse Celebration at 5 p.m. Thursday, November 8, in the Escalante Room of the Vrooman Center, room 103.
“It’s time to change the narrative surrounding first generation students,” said Tamekia Bailey of University College. “This event will celebrate first generation students’ strengths and abilities while also learning about their needs in and outside of the classroom.”
The celebration will kick-off with a panel of First-Generation Redbirds, who will share their experiences. Professor of Education Pamela Hoff, Ph.D., will also discuss her upcoming research on first-generation students. The event will end with the opportunity for students to mix and mingle with other first-generation faculty, staff, and students.
Activities are part of a national celebration of first-generation students through the Council for Opportunity for Education partnered with National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). November 8 marks the date anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act, which has helped millions of income-eligible students become the first members of their families to earn college degrees.
The event is free and open to members of the University community who are or support first-generation students. The celebration is sponsored by University College and MECCPAC, a Dean of Students diversity initiative, and the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs.
