University High School is pleased to announce two new administration changes for the upcoming academic year.
Director of Athletics and Activities
Steve Evans was named the new Director of Athletics and Activities of University High School. Mr. Evans is currently the Assistant Principal at University High School. He replaces Ms. Wendy Smith, who is retiring after 35 years in education.
Mr. Evans has nine years of experience as a classroom teacher and eight years of experience as an administrator. During his eight-year tenure as Assistant Principal of University High School, Mr. Evans was instrumental in creating and implementing district safety protocols and was in charge of all University High School facilities, among many other duties.
Upon acceptance of his new position, Mr. Evans stated, “It is exciting to work with the students in a different role. I am honored to work with our coaches and sponsors as we continue to help our students grow by learning life lessons through competitions, teamwork, successes and failures. University High School has a strong tradition to student commitment in extracurricular activities. It is amazing knowing that I can support that tradition.”

He is passionate about extracurricular activities, and will support our students and coaches in our extracurricular programs. When asked about her retirement, Ms. Wendy Smith stated, “I feel extremely fortunate to have spent the last 25 years of my career at University High School. It truly is a special place. Congratulations to Steve Evans on his new role at U-High. He will do a great job!”
Assistant Principal
Michael Shanley was named the new Assistant Principal of University High School. Mr. Shanley is currently an Assistant Principal of Bloomington High School.
Mr. Shanley has eight years of experience as a classroom teacher in the Chicago Public Schools, and six years of experience as an administrator. During his five-year tenure as Assistant Principal of Bloomington High School, Mr. Shanley organized data to inform the creation of school committees in the areas of grading, truancy, and restorative practices, among many other duties.
“I am really excited for the opportunity to be a part of University High School and look forward to serving its community of students, families, and professionals in a way that will support an already strong tradition in education,” stated Mr. Shanley upon acceptance of his new position.

Mr. Shanley’s focus on each student as an individual matches the philosophy of our educational system. I look forward to working together with Mr. Shanley and our families to continue to help our students grow.”
