Yosimar Reyes will facilitate the Safe(ish) sessions for October and November with a theme of migration and sexuality. The program will be from noon-1 p.m. November 30 at the Illinois State University Multicultural Center. The event is free and open to the campus community.
Safe(ish) is a 60-minute interactive program that helps individuals understand the personal narratives and experiences of gender-expansive and LGBTQIA+ individuals. The interactive sessions aim to provide an opportunity for understanding and deeper commitments around disrupting oppression and valuing intersectional identities.
Reyes is a nationally acclaimed speaker, poet, educator, and performance artist. The Advocate named Reyes one of “13 LGBT Latinos Changing the World” and Remezcla included Reyes on their list of “10 Up And Coming Latinx Poets You Need To Know.”
His work has been published in various online journals and books including Mariposas: An Anthology of Queer Modern Latino Poetry (Floricanto Press), Queer in Aztlán: Chicano Male Recollections of Consciousness and Coming Out (Cognella Press), and the forthcoming Joto: An Anthology of Queer Xicano & Chicano Poetry (Kórima Press). Reyes was featured in the Documentary, “2nd Verse: The Rebirth of Poetry.”
