The Association of Black Academic Employees (ABAE) has teamed up with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., February 10 in the Rosa Parks Room at Watterson Towers. The blood drive is co-sponsored by the Office of the President, the RED Committee of the Illinois State University Alumni Association, Illinois State University Black Colleagues Association, and Heartland Community College.
This specific blood drive is focused on bringing awareness and education around sickle cell anemia. Sickle cell is a red blood cell disorder inherited from parents and affects the shape of the cells with a rate of incidence greatly higher in Black newborns. Each participating donor will be provided a special sickle cell T-shirt and a $20 Amazon gift card as a thank you. The Black community has an urgent need for blood and you can be the answer.
For an appointment, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit RedCrossBlood.org. Be sure to bring a photo ID or your blood donor card, or two other forms of ID.
