Dr. Lori Riverstone-Newell has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for her continued work on the Local Power and Politics Review (LPPR).

The Review was founded by Riverstone-Newell, who is an associate professor of politics and government at Illinois State University. The annual report examines local governments’ power and capacity to meet local needs, bring together authors as advocate-researcher co-authors to produce short articles highlighting recent research findings, emerging issues, and data and research needs across seven public health fields: local fiscal authority, labor policy, environmental policy, civil rights and discrimination, housing policy, and emerging technologies.

“The LPPR is unique in that it connects researchers and advocates who bond through the writing process, forming relationships and sharing perspectives that would not have otherwise been possible. These relationships are critical to advocacy efforts,” said Riverstone-Newell, who is currently preparing to publish the next edition in the coming weeks.

The publication provides an important tool with a national audience. LPPR has a real-world impact on state policy and aids advocates in their work to secure rights and protections for workers, renters, LGBTQ+, women, and children, and the environment, among others.
