The Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program (WGSS) has announced the Spring 2023 Speaker Series. The series will collaborate with Queer Talks, a series featuring LGBTQIA2S+ and queer studies research from emerging scholars in the field. Each talk will be held in the Multicultural Center, Room 150. Light snacks will be provided.
Dr. Ericka Wills, “Women’s Crucial Roles in Sustaining Mining Strikes and Solidarity,” February 27, 2 p.m.
Dr. Ericka Wills is an assistant professor with the University of Wisconsin’s School for Workers, where she leads classes, research, and activism for rank-and-file workers. Working with the United Steelworkers, Wills helped build cross-border relations between United States and Mexican copper miners.
Dr. Juan Ríos Vega, “Testimonios of a Queer and Transnational Mariposa,” March 9, 1 p.m.
Dr. Juan Ríos Vega is an associate professor at Bradley University in the Department of Education, Counseling and Leadership. Using a transnational mariposa consciousness as part of Joteria studies, Dr. Ríos Vega documents the experiences of self-identified LGBT individuals in Panama. He is also the author of Carlos, The Fairy Boy, a children’s picture book.
Dr. Ela Przybylo, “Aces and Aros: We’re Sexy and We Know It,” March 22, 1:30 pm.
Dr. Ela Przybylo is an assistant professor in the Department of English and core faculty in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at Illinois State University. Her talk on asexuality features a student-led Q&A on asexual and aromantic identities, drawing on her past research and ISU course.
Armen Álvarez, “Bombazos: A Cross-Examination of Caribbean TransIndigenous and Transcolonial Feminist Intersubjectivities,” April 17, 2 p.m.
Armen Álvarez is a doctoral student and Jackson Scholar in the College of Education at Illinois State University. Her research focuses on the epistemological foundations of education with an emphasis on coloniality and Puerto Rico.
