Professor Rose Marshack, director of Creative Technologies at Illinois State University, will give a presentation about her new book Play Like a Man: My Life in Poster Children at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, in the Speaker’s Corner on Floor 2 of Milner Library. A Q&A, a reception, and a book signing will follow the presentation. Books will be available to purchase at the event through Barnes & Noble.

In the book, Marshack details her experience touring, writing, and coding across the United States as a founding member of the indie rock group Poster Children. She describes how emerging digital technologies opened up new avenues for musicians to record, promote, and distribute music without needing major label or commercial input. Poster Children signed a major label deal with Warner Bros. imprints Reprise and Sire Records a few albums into the band’s career but realized that internet technology offered more creative control, so they returned to their independent status.

Through it all, Marshack notes the trials and triumphs of being a woman working (and rocking) across multiple male-dominated fields. Play Like a Man: My Life in Poster Children is available through Milner Library. It was published by the University of Illinois Press with a supporting grant from Illinois State University.

The event and following reception are open to the public—all are welcome.
