The Office of Research and Graduate Studies (ORGS) and Milner Library have partnered to expand open access publishing capacity with the scholarly publisher Taylor & Francis. A previous agreement supports the immediate and public availability of the work of university scholars to readers worldwide. Students and faculty from the Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology, College of Applied Science and Technology, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, Mennonite College of Nursing, and Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts have already benefitted from this agreement, sharing their research on such rich subjects of inquiry as:
- “Factors that Impact Assigned Female Sexual Minority Individuals Health Care Experiences,” Maureen Rabbitte, Nursing
- “Impact of Food Insecurity on the Health and Well-Being of College Students,” Haley Lemp, Jacqueline Lanier, Alicia Wodika, and Gabriella Schalasky, Health Sciences
- “Mapping Communities of Mothering: Where Race, Class, Gender, and Space Intersect,” Cynthia Edmonds-Cady, Social Work
- “Asynchronous Student Engagement in Analysis of Climate Data Achieves Learning Objectives Related to Climate Change Understanding, Statistical Competence, and Climate Anxiety,” Paul Meister, Geography, Geology, and the Environment; Rebekka Darner, CeMAST
- “Comprehension, Diagram Analysis, Integration, and Interest: A Cross-Sectional Analysis,” Courtney Hattan, Teaching and Learning
- “Stoic Indulgence, Gratuitous Restraint: White Feelings and Campus Art,” Bert Stabler, Art
- “The Vignette Method: A Flexible Method for Capstone Courses and as a Supplemental Learning Experience in Research Labs,” Susan Sprecher, Sociology and Anthropology
- “Are the Informal Economy and Cryptocurrency Substitutes or Complements?” Rajeev K. Goel, Economics
- “U.S.-China Economic Links and Technological Decoupling,” Kevin Zhang, Economics
- “The Scientific Curiosity of Preservice Elementary Teachers and Confidence for Teaching Specific Science Topics,” Allison Antink-Meyer and Melissa Brown, Teaching and Learning
Milner and ORGS are committed to supporting university researchers regardless of academic discipline, campus unit, or classification. Investing funds with Taylor & Francis is an acknowledgement of historic publishing practices of university authors, who have long placed their work with the publisher, and a desire to provide more explicit support to scholars in education, humanities, and social and applied sciences. According to Dr. Craig C. McLauchlan, associate vice president for Research and Graduate Studies, the additional support made sense in the current publishing climate. “We know that our scholarship has a greater impact when it is open and available. We also know that there are barriers to making our work publicly available,” McLauchlan said. “Milner Library has been a fantastic advocate for the campus in determining where we can see the biggest impact for our scholars. We’ve worked together to find ways to augment our support and it is great to see this agreement already reaping benefits for our scholars.”
In its 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, Milner Library committed to increasing support for the research and creative productivity of university scholars and to that end has entered into several Open Access agreements.
