Distinguished Professor Ali Riaz has been interviewed and quoted on Bangladesh’s upcoming election and the political impasse in various international media in the past week. These reports highlight the contentious electoral process, especially the impacts of the election being boycotted by the opposition parties. Thousands of leaders and activists have been arrested, and more than 1,500 have been convicted by courts on various charges of violence, which media have described as fictitious. The election is scheduled for January 7.

Riaz was quoted by United News Bangladesh (UNB), on December 31, 2023, in a report titled“Despite topsy-turvy year that ends meekly, BNP’s resolve to topple govt unbroken,” as well as in Nikkei Asia on December 26 in a report titled “From India and Pakistan to Indonesia, Asia set for election-packed 2024.”

He was also quoted in Baner News on December 21, 2023, in a report titled “Journalists in Bangladeshi diaspora say govt targets them through transnational repression,”and finally, in German newspaper Tagesspiegel on December 15 in a report titled, “Vom Armenhaus zum Wirtschaftswunder: Der besondere Aufstieg von Bangladesch.”
