Everyone is welcome to attend the second annual Communities of Belonging and Success (COBAS) Taller (workshop) on Thursday, June 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Williams Hall, Room 314. The workshop is made possible by an Illinois State University Provost Innovation and Enhancement Grant. There is no cost for attending, but participants must register in advance with Lourdes Concepción Cabán at ldconce@ilstu.edu.
“What does ISU need to know about college-bound Latino/a/x students?” is the title of the workshop, and its focus is on what initiatives are needed to help Latinx students move through college. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Mariana Barragan Torres, a research specialist at the Illinois Workforce and Education Research Collaborative (IWERC). She also currently serves as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her talk will include the results of a major landscape study of Latinx student access and degree completion in Illinois.
This workshop is sponsored by the Latin American and Latino/a Studies Program at Illinois State, in collaboration with the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.
“The Latin American and Latino/a/x Studies Program is committed to the recruitment and retention of Latinx, first-generation, undocumented, and dacamented students,” said Dr. Maura Toro-Morn, director of the program. “This program will help us understand the issues students face in preparation for college and for their college success and sense of belonging. We hope you can join us.”
