Milner Library is expanding programs to recognize and support Illinois State University authors who have published books. The library has long purchased books published by faculty authors and these are discoverable in the library catalog. A new display near the entrance to the library and a digital exhibit highlight Illinois State authors who have recently published books.

If you’ve published a book and would like for Milner to acquire it, please submit a purchase request form. Similarly, if your book is in our collection but it isn’t identified as such, please let us know. University authors are incredibly prolific, and we apologize if we’ve overlooked your book!

If you’d like to discuss a recent book publication with the University community, Milner Library would be happy to host the event. Recent book talks at Milner celebrated Director of Creative Technologies Rose Marshack’s Play Like a Man: My Life in Poster Children and Professor of Ethnomusicology Ama Oforiwaa Aduonum’s Walking With Asafo in Ghana: An Ethnographic Account of Kormantse Bentsir Warrior Music.

The next book event at Milner is Dr. Gina Hunter’s interactive discussion of her work Edible Insects: A Global History, which is set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12. Please reach out to your subject librarian if you’d like to discuss a book event.

Finally, some Open Access support is available for books and chapters. Milner is a member of Open Book Publishers, a scholar-led Open Access publisher in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Open Book Publishers makes high-quality research freely available to readers around the world at no cost to authors.

Milner librarians also worked with IGI Global representatives and the authors to flip their chapters to Open Access at no additional cost. Your book chapters or even full-length monographs may be suitable for green Open Access deposit in ISU ReD. Please review your author agreement or reach out to isured@IllinoisState.edu with any questions about which version might be appropriate to deposit.

We welcome ideas for other ways to recognize and support your book publications—Write, You Redbirds!
