This fall, the Creatively Critical Tech: Research + Practice + Design virtual speaker series will host five leading teams of scholars, creators, and educators whose work advances innovative and inclusive community-engaged research, design, and practice using emergent technologies and media. The series is sponsored by the ISU Office of Research and Graduate Studies and is hosted by Dr. Anna Smith and the Education Now Lab, a community-engaged research-practice lab with interdisciplinary partners across campus. To learn more and register for the series, please visit the Education Now Lab website. “I am so happy to support the Creatively Critical Tech: Research + Practice + Design virtual speaker series,” said AVP for research and graduate studies Dr. Craig C. McLauchlan. “Dr. Smith and the Education Now Lab have assembled a great lineup of speakers for the series. We know it will be very thought-provoking and of interest to people all across campus and beyond.”

Smith says of the series, “It has been thrilling to see the enthusiastic response of these sought-after speakers when invited to join the series. I think this series will be of most interest to colleagues and graduate students working in digital scholarship, education, creative technologies, media, and communication, who are interested in innovative and participatory forms of research and design.”

Our speakers engage in a range of creatively critical methods including film, video gaming, fabrication, podcasting, transmedia storytelling, and participatory infrastructure. For instance, our first session includes a team of collaborators, including co-producer and co-writer Dr. sava saheli singh, co-producer Lesley Marshall, and co-writer Tim Maughan, who use film as scholarship to investigate and communicate the potential harms of the many invisible surveillance systems across our lives. Their series Screening Surveillance is freely available at https://www.screeningsurveillance.com/.

The series will have ASL interpreters and will be recorded. To learn more about each of the speakers and to register for the series, please visit the Education Now Lab website.
