In January 2023 the Office of Research and Graduate Studies (ORGS) announced a new program titled “Advancing Research and Creative Scholarship (ARCS).” This program had the specific goal of creating a mechanism that encourages researchers and scholars at Illinois State University to collaborate in cross-disciplinary research teams to address big, bold scholarly themes. This type of research seeks to solve some of the world’s most complicated problems, often termed “wicked problems.”

Teams applied for one of two different tracks. Track I proposals were for fully developed plans for interdisciplinary collaboration and are thus ready to submit a full proposal to support the implementation of a robust project with established plans. Track II proposals will support capacity building, allowing individuals and nascent teams to develop a plan to grow innovative ideas into a robust, interdisciplinary project, which can be proposed in the future.

Twenty-two teams applied for this award, and applications were reviewed by an external review panel. While they were impressed with the quality of proposals, they felt that three stood above all the others. These three teams were awarded the Track I award and six additional teams were selected to receive the Track II award. Congratulations to all of those selected and good luck!
